Chasing Conditions rather than Fish..

...It is always risky making predictions where fish are involved. But, here is how I see the coming weeks where gamefish are concerned...With a full moon on June 5th, the next 10 days before the full moon should produce some prime opportunities for landing a big one..
....First, the early morning and late afternoon high tides are right for feeding times and good vis..Second, the moonlight on the water pulls up squid near the surface and the gamefish move in to feed actively. The early am tides have sufficient movement to activate baitfish feeding on plankton and that will pull in gamefish near the kelp beds. The 3 1/2' a.m. tide change provides decent current, which, is when the gamefish become active on, but, is not so strong as to wear out a diver working the current.
... The afternoon highs will build to over 5', which can create safety issues at offshore spots like Ship Rock and Farnsworth Bank. The fish should be there, but, you will have to swim hard to stay put in the current. One positive is the wind and current produces chop, which will blur your surface shape and make you less visible from below..
...Assuming you can catch a good weather window(not easy these days, with windy days; one after another), the volume of fish is there and should build in the next 2 weeks. There are yellowtail at Santa Barbara island; both sides of Catalina and lots of yt at San Clemente island on both sides with white sea bass on both backside ends and in the middle backside. Large wsb are being caught at San Nicolas island... Rizzos 10 miles off Long Beach means squid...squid means local yellowtail and a good volume of Barracuda. Currently, the Channel Islands are holding large wsb and big halibut..
...Catalina is looking good above Salta Verde where squid are present up thru Ben Weston...As far as Bluefin, they are on the move n/w and will probably show on the ridge below San Clemente and on Cortez/Tanner Bank by mid-July or earlier...With some 300 pounders in the bag already, a 400 pounder is not out of the question this year...With tons of sauries in our waters: once the bluefin find them; it is game on!
...If you can't get out to the islands, there is a grunion run July 4th-7th and 20th-23rd, providing a chance at a big halibut if you can find some decent vis inshore. Me, I am putting the Parker into West Coast Marine this week for new timing belts, impeller replacement and water pump rebuilds...Once H.M.S Balluga is back in commission, it will be time to steer due West.. The Good Wife will enjoy the full moon shining brightly over Avalon bay, aided by a few glasses of Blackstone merlot......For a while, the virus and politics will be far, far away....UPDATE: 6/27...some Bluefin showing off San Clemente island, staying deep, so it will be a time of day thing....squid in Pyramid cove means yellowtail volume...

Our vacation this year may be to Puerto Backyarta
