Re: Eyes on Carlsbad?
Checked it out today. Didn't go in. Couldn't see any kelp. Did it all disappear or something? In any case, if anyone gets the urge to dive let me know. I should be free on the weekends.

Re: Eyes on Carlsbad?
Dove ponto, vis sucked, was almost hitting the sand with my face. No reef or kelp that I could see. Course I only stayed out about 15 minutes tops.

Re: Eyes on Carlsbad?
Reviving this thread.
I lost my contact for blue water diving earlier this year (he bought a house, so he sold his boat ) so its back to shore diving for me. I dearly miss diving for tuna, dodo and YT offshore, but alas, not this epic year. got in around 7 am this morning for a shake down of my shorediving skills and instantly met with spindrift murky 12 ft vis. We stayed 20 feet and less, hunting some sheepshead for stalking purposes. I took a few large sargo for some fish tacos tonight. While working our way back in, the slight surge pushed the eel grass off and over a depression in the reef filled with sand, exposing this 25'' halibut. Took the shot just behind the gill plate at point blank range. We took a look around the area for more, but couldn't spook up anything else, save for a lonely 15-20'' WSB that looked lost. Hoping to see some more posts in this thread, I miss being an avid year round diver and not a spoiled blue water hunter . |

Re: Eyes on Carlsbad?
Jake! I am not alone in this thread anymore haha.
I had a great time last night. Dove from 6-830, the vis was a bit dusty, but almost 15 ft at times between the surge. My buddy got 9 clickers (threw them all back obviously) and no keepers, I got 4 keepers and 5 clickers I threw back. THEY WERE CRAWLING. Almost all of my legals came from eel grass pockets, and a couple close ones were sitting on the lip of caves, saw me coming down, and tried to boogie into the cave. Windy.com shows it should be pretty damn good by saturday night. |

That's awesome. I've never dove south of Dana Point for bugs, but have to get down there this season. |
