SF and Pacifica - SCUBA PADI diver - looking to get into spearing

Hey err body!

I have been living in SF for 2 years now and getting into every sport the area has to offer. I got big into crabbing and fishing from the pier in Pacifica and a few nice strippers this summer from Ocean Beach.

Now I am sick of dangling my line in the water not knowing what is out there, I want to experience the stalking method of spearfishing and really enjoy being in the water anytime.

Ive been doing alot of reading about what type of spear to get... just a pole spear to start with? or splurge for the $300 at the store for a new gun?

are free-dive fins really necessary? they are a little pricey ie $100? can i get by with cheaper scuba fins?
