Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Hey, Grey when you say snotty, was it the floating green algae on the bottom 10 feet or hazy with particulate. I'm out of Pinellas and the last almost month has been the algae everywhere which is not a lot of fun. This last weekend I was down closer to egmont and had no algae, just hazy with particulate. I'm wondering if the algae has cleared everywhere or if I should stay a little further south this weekend? Thanks

There was a bit of algae on the bottom in some places, and at times it was floating around - but mostly it was the hazy/particulate on the bottom 10 feet, and we got a bit of a current since it was full moon and that caused it to be stirred up a bit as well.

Vis was terrible on yesterday (6/6/15) out of Johns Pass area. 45' had 10' vis. Hit South County with not a whole lot to show except some mangroves. Still snotty and the summer time particulate is thick. It's been pretty bad the last 3 trips I have been out. Take me back to the bahamas!

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

Vis report for Sunday (7th) West of John's Pass:
125fsw - 15' vis
115fsw - 20ish' vis
80fsw - 25-30' vis
70fsw - 15' vis

Ugly conditions out there. We were hoping that the deep depths would yield better vis results but no-go

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

We dodged storms Saturday and ended up south of the shipping channel running out of JP. Actually had some real nice visibility which would have been even better with a little sun in 50 feet +/-. I'd say at least 35 feet of vis. Not the fishiest of spots but we put a few nice hogs on the boat. No algae and not much particulate.

Dove in 50' near Veterans Memorial Reef on Sunday(6/7/15) at a spot I call "Torpedo Ledge" (because I have seen gags the size of torpedos). Vis was about 30' horizontal. The algae that was clogging up the reefs is gone but there is a lot of particulate(snot) in the water now. Water temps around 85 at the surface. Seas 1' or less.

Vis was a good 25' in 50-65' depth out of Ft Desoto but all the ledges are shot out. Welcome to summer diving!

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

OMFG - guys, I'm not one for hyperbole or over-exaggeration - but wow. Today was the BEST day of diving I have ever had. 50 feet of water, 23 miles due west of NPR - top to bottom viz, 50 feet of horizontal viz - TONS of fish on all 3 dive spots we hit all within 1 mile of each other. MONSTER gags, loads of sherpa, mangos, a few hogs of legal size but lots of small fries coming along. A few nurse sharks, lots of triggerfish of legal size, some reds barely on the cusp. Had an awesome day - great conditions, just me and a good buddy - couldn't find anyone else to go out - their misfortune as it was an epic day. Even go to swim with a big pod of Atlantic bottle-nose dolphin for the first time ever. Guys, it was amazing. Still shaking my head over it.

Video to follow.

Re: Current Vis - Tampa Bay Region (Homosassa to Sarasota)

I went out Sunday 60 miles in 130 ft and the viz was maybe 10 ft at best..... Hit limit on ars . Then went in to 70ft and the viz was even worse 5 ft at most... It was the same spot we had 30 ft viz a week earlier
