Ive got all the gear and ready to go whenever if anyone else has a trip planned or wants to plan one.

I tried out of Whittier last summer but the vis was terrible. Definitely the toughest diving Ive done. It was like looking through a soup of plankton and tiny jellyfish, along with tons of weight, a ridiculously thick wetsuit and wool socks cause I cant fit a decently thick bootie in my fins! Regardless I'm interested if anyone else has the motivation as well.

When I go out next Im headed to Seward. Just need good vis but I am unsure on how to predict it. Im thinking weak tides, minimal swell and far away from any glacial fed streams and it should be alright. This was not the case in Prince William Sound though... If anyone has any ideas let me know

Can you spear year-round in Alaska, or only during the summer?

You can spear year round in south central - south east. Regs are same as rr

I'm very interested in joining an Alaska-bound spearo crew as well.
It would be good to know more about the seasonality of Halibut in AK, do they move to shallower waters at certain time of year for eg.

I think they move into the shallows in the late fall to feed on the abundant salmon carcasses. Not sure about summer and winter.

From the one time fishing and one time diving southeast Alaska I found that September was best. The water temperature was up from the summer and the visibility was better because of the lower plankton levels. Unless it rains then the water turns brown.
I dove with 7 mm open cell suit, same as I use in northern California. No problems.
I have heard of large halibut coming in as shallow as 20 feet at the mouths of rivers to feed on salmon but I only saw flounders and one small halibut.
The boat captains will take you out but there knowledge of shallow water diving areas may be limited. The halibut we caught on Rod n reel were 200 to 600 feet.
I would like to do it again. If somebody wants to put something together I would like to get in on it.

A few years latter... I'm going to be in Ancorage the first week of August 2017 and would enjoy a day of free diving / spear fishing pending on decent spearing conditions / and finding a local experienced spearo. Anyone up

Just wanted to revive this thread. Headed out for the month of October for an aerial survey job, should be in the Anchorage area. Anyone up there locally that could let me know if it would be worthwhile to bring my gear up and if there are decent dive spots with in a day's drive, or charters that take spearos?

Went out of Homer in August. Poor vis, due to timing with the tides. Scouted it a week prior with big tides and had better vis. If you make it back up, pm me and we can try to link up for some diving.

Greetings, jumping on this somewhat revived thread and looking for dive buddies. I just found out I am moving to Anchorage in April/May. A little about myself, I have been diving the Puget sound for the past 3 years spearing lings and Rock fish, and so I am familiar with the cold water.
Is the community alive in that area or am I up for a drive anytime I want to get wet?
I currently own a boat, Is it worth bringing to Alaska? Its a aluminum 17' Lund, 90 Hp and 9.9 kicker. I cant seem to find any boat launches in Anchorage, is Whittler a reliable place to launch seems like the tide swings are not as large. It just seems like most boats are either way bigger or Zodiaks.
