Question How to Properly kill a halibut after spearing??

Im pretty much a Noob when it comes to spearfishing.(4 years ) But I am obsessed with spearing Halibut, i got my money spot and always seem to get at least one whenever i go.. How do you properly kill a flattie after spearing it?? I usually stab it a couple times in the head, but it usually doesnt die right away, and im afraid that they will bite me when i have it on my stringer? I havent purchased a float line yet. Any advice?

rip the gills which will bleed them out and make the meat taste better
and just behind the center of the eyes theres a brain spot that will put them to sleep
u can get to it thru th gills or on the outside of the fish

Re: How to Properly kill a halibut after spearing??

I don't recommend bleeding a halibut while towing it on a stringer..just asking for trouble...Brian Donnell of the Neptunes had a blue shark come up to his paddleboard and start tugging on a fish hanging off his waist in the water while he was sitting on the board... imagine it happening while you are swimming.......I stick them in the head two or three times just behind the eye, with a knife or sharp stringer point...usually does the trick...don't think bleeding a flattie will change the flavor much,as they don't have the blood volume a yellowtail or wsb has...
