Question Catalina Kayak or Boat Spearing

My wife and I are staying at a friends Condo in Hamilton Cove April 22-26. I'd like to get out one of the days to dive and fish, specifically for some larger species. I have a riffe euro 120 w reel and flopper, a 110 with slip tip, an 80 w reel and double flopper (this is what I usually use when diving channel islands). I also can rig a breakaway with a 1 ATM float. I've never speared at Catalina so I don't know much about the fish spots outside of forum posts. I understand that twin harbors on the front side is a decent place (rock quarry) and that from my location, I could kayak to Frog rock. I haven't found too many charters, but did find one guy (Adam Olsen) that would take me out on his boat for $100/hr. If I found another buddy or two to dive with, we would split that cost, making it $30/hr/person.

1) I've heard of a few people on this forum that live out there. I'd love some guidance or better yet a dive buddy.
2) anyone interested in meeting me over there and sharing that boat and going after some YT or WSB for a few hours? He said its only a 20min ride from Avalon to get on the good fish.
3) Do you know someone that's familiar with the area that you could connect me with?

Please PM or reply ASAP so I can reserve the boat or get things ready.

Re: Catalina Kayak or Boat Spearing

...A couple of suggestions, high end cost to low....Contact Capt. John King of Afishinados Tours 888 613-7770 or online at john@afishinados.com in Avalon...Good guy who knows the island and the fish spots...He can tell you if his charters are in your price range or perhaps, suggest a lower cost islander with a skiff that would take you out...
...or,....call Joe's Rent a Boat on the pier to see if their skiffs, kayaks or paddleboards are in service (about $60 an hour for a 16' skiff and outboard)...just make sure an anchor and line is included if you go this route, as they forget this item on occasion because most guys are just trolling with a rod or sightseeing with a companion..
...or, rent a taxi (about $5 or 10) to run you out to Pebbly Beach (helioport near the concrete ramp) to dive the dropoff along the rocky beach ...swim to the cliff and outside about 300' is a high spot where a yellowtail or white sea bass may come within range..I have landed yellows there...around the cliff on the other side is a wsb spot if there is kelp growing..
...or, take a cart or folding wagon over with you and walk out to the beach area hauling your gear....from the moored boats beyond Ring Rock to the cliff is a good yellowtail and occasional wsb area...Ring Rock is within a closed preserve so go out as far as the moorings before entering the water ..I have speared wsb among the moorings on the sand flat...Back when I was a poor college student, I would haul my gear in a cooler going over to the island with my cart and bag it on top coming back, with fish and ice in the cooler..
...or, from Hamilton Cove, you can swim to the points of land or paddleboard west to Frog Rock( there is a reef outside Frog) for a chance at gamefish..the sand coves may hold a halibut or two this time of year..also, you might be able to steal, er, borrow, a Hamilton golf cart and ask a local to get you thru the locked gate to drive west over to some coves near the road..(Currently, the inland Stagecoach road will be closed on April 12th while they do repairs but, the Two Harbors cliff road is open)….But, don't forget plan B....water may be peasoup green...that leaves Descanso Beach for afternoon drinks and bikini watching; a ride down the cable line in the canyon;, a fish dinner (hey, I am not proud) at the Lobster Trap Bar and Grill and definitely take your better half to a movie at the one of a kind Casino theatre...
...Sea lions are a pain in the arse this year...on one hand, you can use them to find bait schools to dive under to find gamefish..on the other hand, they drive the gamefish deeper and try to take your fish..a hard punch to the nose usually ends the fight over who gets dinner, depending on how bad you want the fish...good luck......p.s. not sure yet, but, wife and I might be there on our Parker for the Art Festival that week end...will contact you if we go over and I can work some diving into the program...

If you get this in time, contact Adam Olsen 1-320-592-5988.

He is the cap that will do the $100/hr charter.
