Shorediving is Rough
For some reason the visibility has been inconsistent this summer. So much effort for so little return (1 decent fish per 5 or so dives in poor vis), but I am still stoked.
Sidenote, I shot a 30 lb. YT 6-7 feet away from my shaft. It was a perfect broadside shot to the center of the fish and the shaft passed clean through, but the flopper failed to deploy ... I sat there and watched my shaft fall from the fish. Juvie WSB, two 35 lb. YT and one 20 lb. YT, hali and bonito. I also hit a 100' dive with plenty of air to spare on an unproductive day offshore, even now thinking about that moment gets my blood pumping. Nice work. Try attaching the shooting line up the shaft and not on the end and the shaft will toggle and not pull out of the fish as easy. Keep up the good work.

Nice fish kid, keep up the good work. But I don't see any 35 pound YT in the photos. Were there more that I missed?

Re: Shorediving is Rough
You can drill the shaft or get a fin shaft.

Re: Shorediving is Rough
Or you can just tune your flopper properly

Re: Shorediving is Rough
floppers suck...with big gamefish around, you need a detachable point and cable so it toggles once thru the fish...that said, try wrapping a rubber band behind the flopper to push it out from the shaft...often, meat will jam between the flopper and shaft inside the pin area, preventing the flopper from moving....lots of wind stirring up the shallow water...5 miles out is purple clear stuff...Like I always need a bigger boat, you need a longer gun....keep up the good work....

Re: Shorediving is Rough
On a dive prior to the flopper failing, I shot at a sheephead and hit solid rock. The shaft was bent ~10* 6" behind the flopper and ~15* forward of the flopper. Additionally the shaft cracked at the pin. I had it straightened at J&J and it seemed to be fine after that. Also it is a 7 mm riffe shaft with minisharkfin tabs.
I refurbished a 120cm RA but lost it in the surf after my buddies yak flipped (2nd and last time I ever dove from a yak). Idk about the weight, but both fish were packed with roe. I don't have an official scale, but I took the difference between my weight with and without the fish (ghetto evaluation/calibration of the scale accuracy was performed by taking the difference between my weight with and without a 25 lb. dumbbell). I know it's not worth the effort to dispute over the weight, but these fish had girth and were definitely 35 or close to 35. I'm 6'2" btw. Last edited by SDTriton; 08-24-2017 at 11:18 PM. |
