Just picked up my Veggie Powered Truck!

I just completed my first 40 miles driving on pure recycled veg. oil! A few months ago I got feed up with high gas prices and sending money to nations that really don't like us and decided to do something about it. I did a ton of research and went and purchased a 2003 Dodge Cummins 4x4 Long Bed Turbo Diesel. Forget those little hybirds, I wanted something fun to drive while using an alternative fuel. I ended up going with a company called Plantdrive and you can add a .com to that name to find out more. The installer was a cat named Miguel at a boat shop in Hawthorn called M and K Marine. He did a really pro job on the installation and even protected the wires underneath the truck like they were going in to a salty bilge. The total cost of the conversion was a bit under 4k and that included a custom made 45 gal fuel tank, a $500 high performance FASS fuel pump, and a few other bells and whistles for cold weather travel. I figure if all goes well then in 12 months I'll have recouped my investment and after that it's free gas and a few hundred extra in the pocket each month.
If you dont know what I'm talking about, I'm actually saying that my car runs on the waste oil out of a fryer from restaurants. Most places are more than happy to give it to you if you ask.
So far the diesel seem to love when I flip to swtich to veg and the engine evens quites down when it gets all lubed up with the veg.
There was a point last month where I was actually calculating the cost of driving up north to get abs and figured it was over 200 bucks! Now it won't cost a penny! If any wants to know more about this stuff, PM me and I'll help you out.

I look forward to hearing how this goes for you. I have a 2006 GMC and am contemplating making the switch.

Re: Just picked up my Veggie Powered Truck!

The Duramaxes are tricky and the only person I would rec. is Chris Godwin at Frybird for that engine. The computer on the truck is really picky about the temp of the fuel so so changes have to be made. Dodges, Fords, and Mercedes are generally the easiest to convert.
The oil is collected from local restaurants. I have a 55 gallon drum ni the back of one and another outs the oil back in the original 5 gallon containers for me to pick up.
It then comes home to settle in a 55 the I suck it out through a filter and into my tank. After the tank it gets heated and filtered again on the way to the injectors.

Sweet idea. Can't wait to see someone put that set up on their boat. Cheep fuel and it smells like french fries when your heading out to the islands.

Re: Just picked up my Veggie Powered Truck!

You get about the same as diesel. With Biodiesel you lose about 10% and with Ethanol you lose about 15% or more of you fuel effeciency.

Re: Just picked up my Veggie Powered Truck!

A very expensive high performance FASS fuel pump for Veg and racing applications which I opted for instead of the stock Dodge pump. 5 year warranty on pump with veg running through it. I will be carrying a cheap back up pump just in the event that the pump fails and a mechanic can't figure out what the heck I'm cooking underneath the car.

Re: Just picked up my Veggie Powered Truck!

Right on Mike,
I run a first generation cummins and have been running bio diesel off and on between price slumps. I have been looking into the veggie conversion, (you may have inspired me further) while my brother who runs all his cars on bio has been looking into making it in the backyard.
