Dogtooth Tuna Research

I sent an email today to some of my friends at IGFA (International Game Fish Association) to see if we could find the right contacts around the world of anyone that could do some useful research on the two big Dogtooth Tuna which we have preserved whole.
I know that some of you all have good contacts for Fisheries Scientists and Ichthyologists so any help networking to find a home for these guys is appreciated.
As far as I know these two fish are some of the largest of the species ever landed and the chance to learn more about them could be helpful to understanding the species more. Both of the fish have been kept on ice with the hope that we can find a researcher, foundation, Taxidermist, Museum or somewhere to put them to good use.
I've posted some more pictures of the two big boys on the original post.

Hope you all enjoy them and if you have any ideas on where the two fish could be sent to be put to good use let me know. blueh2oboy@yahoo.com
Hope to hear from you soon!

Cam do you start to get the same dizzy as P.V ?

if you mean land while `` legally`` spearfishing ..yes you are certainly right.
but EVER land ..NO .

In french Polynesia a 148 kgs (326 Lbs) Dogtooth tuna was Land while trolling
in Marianna a 134 kgs ( 295 Lbs) was land while jigging fishing .

and few more were land this sizes and certainly over yr 243 lbs .

whats about this one that was speared in illegal spearfishing waters ..?

Re: Dogtooth Tuna Research

Hey Cam, I have contacted some NOAA scientists that I know in the world of High Migratory species. I will let you know what they say. Good luck, Tony

Re: Dogtooth Tuna Research

Hi Cameron,

One of the scientists I know is referring it to this fellow in addition to the two NOAA scientists.

FYI, Tony

Quote:
One of the worlds greatest experts on tuna and billfish is Professor Izumi Nakamura of Kyoto University's Maizuru Biological Station. Nakamura-sensei will not doubt be interested in these huge dogtooth tunas.

Re: Dogtooth Tuna Research

Museum of Natural History in NYC has an amazing Display on the World's Oceans they might be interested in piecing together the Skeleton. No contact, but I'm sure it's easy enough to find. It would be interesting to have those fish Mercury tested as well?
Nice job landing those. Having seen a 22kg Dogtooth submerge a big buoy a few days , I'm still amazed that you were able to land those beasts. Tail Shots are the new Head Shots..

Re: Dogtooth Tuna Research

Hey Cam,

Here below is some useful contact information for you and others who might get one of these beasts.

Let us know what happens if anything.

All the best, Tony

Hi Tony -

Following along with the notion that these specimens would be of most use to those scientists working in the region, I might add a few candidates to your list-

Chairman of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission Scientific Committee:
Naozumi Miyabe miyabe@fra.affrc.go.jp

U.S. scientist working with the WCPFC:
Tim Lawson Timl@spc.int

Tuna scientist with the Secretariat of the Pacific Community:
John Hampton JohnH@spc.int

French tuna scientists working in the Indian Ocean:
Renaud Pianet renaud.pianet@ird.fr
Jean-Pierre Hallier jean-pierre.hallier@iotc.org

French tuna scientist at large:
Alain Fonteneau alain.fonteneau@ird.fr

That ought to give you some options.

Re: Dogtooth Tuna Research

Probably not really my place to say, but if he's at sea for a while I'll pipe up... word is one of the doggies got sold by the people entrusted to look after them. The fate of the other one is unknown at this stage.
Stink.
