Transducer Shooting Through Hull Install

So I'm trying to install my raymarine dragonfly transducer into a Malibu X13 and have come up woith a plan, but before I finish up the install, I thought I would run it by a few of you. First of, I know shit about kayaks. I've only used them a few times. Second, my kayak has no way to mount the transducer on the outside of the hull, without it hanging down in such a way that it is likely going to get ripped off on the beach the first time I use it. There is no ready to install hole, there is no deep track or recess. Nothing in the shape of the hull allows it to be tucked away safe even if I'm willing to drill. So....

I researched as much as I could find and then bought a Rubbermaid container that would fit, and cut the bottom off. My plan is to use plumber's putty to create a seal to the inside of the kayak and fill it with water. Thing is, I've read mixed results about this. Several posts I've read on the net suggests this is gonna suck monkey balls and the returns on the display are going to be very poor. Any input before I go the next step?

Check out this thread, tons of ideas for transducers, etc. (You may have to scroll through a few pages)

Ps, I did something like your set up, but marine goop around bottom of tupperware, then filled with water when in use, I think it works just fine.

Re: Transducer Shooting Through Hull Install

I've done 4 kayaks with thru hull transducer.

Use Lexel glue. Get a piece of foam (pool noodle, packing foam) and cut the shape of your transducer in it. Glue the foam down and put a weight on top overnight. Fill in 1/2 inch of Lexel in the cavity and put your transducer in. Put a weight on top overnight.

This method is semi-permanent. I've removed 2 transducers mounted this way. It takes a while with a putty knife to wedge it loose.

That will work, usually on commercial shoot thru hull ducers container is filled with non toxic propylene glycol (antifreeze) and sealed.

Is your Raymarine dragonfly have down vision looks just like my transducer I have the dragonfly 4. And your downscan won’t work with a shoot through the hull setup. Check out this web site. Fishfindermounts.com it’s a little pricey but well worth it I got it and it’s great.

Re: Transducer Shooting Through Hull Install

I'm curious how this turned out. I just got an X13 and a Garmin Strike 4 that I was going to do a through hull transducer install. I was also considering the X-Wing accessories to store all of the cabling and battery high up, but I'm wondering if it's going to inhibit movement too much for diving on and off the yak. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Re: Transducer Shooting Through Hull Install

So After reading the manual on the X13, there's a transducer insert area made for lowerance transducers on the bottom of the hull. who knew? I'm getting the transducer tomorrow so hopefully Garmin will fit and thread in there.
