speaking of cold water diving

I remeber some guys talking about face masks last winter for diving in the cold. what do you guys think of these? neoprene; not sure how thick but might help keep the numbing cold of your face, plus you'll look like a biker gang underwater http://www.neoprene-facemask.com

Try them, honestly I don't think they are a good choice. I think you will find the mask, the neoprene mask, and the hood will be too much. I used to use a full face mask when on SCUBA, the regulator fit through an opening at the mouth. I am not sure if, it would work for free diving because you wouldn't be able to spit out the snorkel.
If the neoprene had a full hood to it, with a piece going down the neck and back and was thin, 1 to 2 mil. that would be better. Just my thoughts, interesting problem tho.

Just smear some bacon fat on your face, that works better. Plus the fish come up and nibble at it, which tickles...then you kill them.

I think OMER makes a face mask with an opening for your snorkel. Great for protection against Jelly Fish. Looks like a pain in the ass when it comes to removing your snorkel before you dive though. jmo

I saw that one. It's camoflauge and the snorkel goes through a special sleeve built directly into the neoprene. Looks like it would work but you'd have to wear it under your wetsuit hood and like Kevin said, I think it would put a lot of pressure on your head. Andrew, who are you foolin? Didn't you make your own last year out of old wetsuit scraps you had laying around? Just duplicate that and mass produce them for $20 a pop and you'll be able to pay for all your new gear (or tools)!

Re: speaking of cold water diving

I'm using one made for diving, bought from Alaska Mining Company:
http://www.akmining.com/cart/hookah_diving_gear.htm
It works great at protecting your face, the neopren is thin and open cell, but the size is tricky (or my head is unusualy large) and need a hand to deal with the snorkel.

I'm supposed to be removing my snorkel before I dive? I'm a newbie and pretty much learn everything from here. Why is this?

Re: speaking of cold water diving

It lets the snorkel fill up with water right away so that air does not bubble out all the way down- blub blub blub- scaring away all the big fishies.

Why should I smear on more bacon fat? There should be lots still on my face left over from breakfast! Besides, if I put it on my face, what would I put on my toast? Next you're going to want me to use my Blue cheese dressing as wet suit lube!

Re: speaking of cold water diving

If im not mistaken that jellyfish hood is like pantyhose thickness. It wont help you for cold water diving. Up here in wisconsin we dive year round, and in december we were getting temps of -40 before the windchill. They do make "ice masks" and I know a guy that owns one. My friends and I dont cut holes in the ice, but when we dive lakes that are partially frozen, or are open in places, we just let our faces go numb. Really not that bad.

Re: speaking of cold water diving

Why to take out the snorkel during dives:
- easier to pack
- don't need to feel you mouth with water (to avoid the snorkel filling noise)
- if you pass out, you might have a chance to keep the water out of your throat (after about 30 seconds or so, your larinx will relax and will the water into your lungs)

Despite all this theory I don't remove it. I've tried but it didn't stick. I'm not doing enough deep dives, and on shallow dives I'm just laizy.

Re: speaking of cold water diving

Lidiver's link to the hookah site has some interesting masks "neoprene ice masks" that look like they would work. Gabes link shows a guy wearing one I believe. that should be workable, I think I might have to try it.
