Re: staining teak

hmmm, went through the same process. All I can say is to make sure that if you use a stain to check if it is a sealant as well. Cause if it is it will be more difficult, if not impossible, to apply the oil. I sampled a test piece first, stain only which looked good. In the end I have decided to oil the gun, using watco teak oil and it looks great! Have oiled it 4 or 5 times now. I will put 1 or some final layers of epoxy on it.

teak takes a different type of stain than normally used for wood...it can be done with great results , but you need to use an alcohol base stain...you can do a bluewater camo pattern easy with either a blue or green alcohol color...but I would do a test first ...once its done it is there foreveror at least a very long time...the alcohol stains go in to the wood grain very deep due to their very fine viscosity...after you do the stain you can put on whatever oil finish you like...compatibility is not a problem with this type stain...t

Spearotiki, where do you live on the Eastern Shore of MD? I grew up in Easton and used to ply the waters off the DE breakwater for stripers.

Re: staining teak

If you plan on coating the gun blank with epoxy do not use an oil base stain(not compatible)...use either and alcohol stain or a h20 base stain and sand with 400 grit paper after.....good luck.

Thumbs up Re: staining teak

Sorry I Did Not Include This First Time But They Also Make Clear Pigmenting For Epoxies , Same Epoxies You Would Use To Laminate Or Saturate Teak.

Re: staining teak

I find few colors of Duro Sur stains in a lumberyard, in the can says Polyurethane polyester nitrocellulose acrylic stain…LOL a little long but I cant find any info on them, they smell like alcohol and they dry super fast, even the store don’t have any info, it was a new product and the company never update any of the products and they are selling them for $5 a liter, I tried them on some pine and they are working great I will oil them later and how it work, I have a piece of teak and will do some test.
Thanks

Re: staining teak

Does anyone know of a company that makes alcohol based stains? I can only find water and oil based ones. Also, are alcohol stains the same as spirit stains?
