Thumbs up Florida Freedivers Forensic Files - 6 Awesome Dive Knife Options w/ Pics

Florida Freedivers Forensic Files

Hello all, today we're taking time to bring the Spearboard community an arms full of top performing and budget friendly dive knives. I tried to feature knives of wide variety to cover the needs of each unique diver out there.

First off is the polished Skeleton Knife & clip-in sheath. This is a universally branded knife and we're able to offer it for a great price. It's made of mirror polished stainless steel, 8.5" long and measures 3/16" thick on the digital calipers. This knife is very lightweight in the hand due to the generous holes machined into the grip area and also very easy to hang onto. The holes can also be used to wrap a grip tape or paracord around as a grip. You could also perhaps dip the knife handle into a rubberized liquid tool coating if wrapping isn't your style.

The Skeleton knife includes a hard plastic sheath that has a very positive feeling retention mechanism that clips the knife into place and holds it securely when the knife is inserted. The mechanism is released with a single finger as you pull the knife out of the sheath. The sheath has drain holes at the bottom and features provisions for two rubber straps that are also included. The rubber straps use a plastic pinch clip closure and are about 20" long so they'll fit around your leg, arm, etc...

The polished Skeleton Knife & Sheath sells for $21.95.

Next is the OMER Laser USA knife and sheath. The Laser knife has a .5cm thick by 3.3" short "stiletto" style blade and is designed primarily for spear fishing. This knife is a popular economical knife for small to medium size prey and is serrated on one side to cut lines and cable. The OMER Laser is made of 420 stainless steel and features a black Teflon finish. The end of the handle has a hole that will accept a tether or any other attachment method of your choosing.

The knife also includes its own proprietary sheath that's designed simply but effectively. The knife slides into the sheath freely and relies on a rubber band that captures the end of the handle and holds it snug into the sheath. Also two rubber straps are included to use, or the sheath accepts a standard 2" width dive belt if you prefer belt mounting. The rubber straps measure 8" in diameter and use plastic pinch buckles that are fully adjustable for leg or arm mounting.

The OMER Laser USA & Sheath goes for $26.95.

I would say the most unique "knife" offering today is the JBL Delta Spike & sheath. This thing is just too cool! It's a knife, it's a spear- it's just plain awesome! JBL states that it's designed for maximum fish penetration. It's 7" long in total and uses an exclusive tri-cut blade that's made from a single piece of teflon-coated surgical stainless steel. It also includes a flexible nylon web holster that uses stretchable elastic straps with velcro closure to ensure a super comfortable fit.

The JBL Delta Spike costs just $17.95.

The Mares Dagger is a beautifully crafted top-quality knife. It has an ergonomic soft rubberized anti-slip handle and a 98mm long PVD coated stainless steel blade. It has one micro serrated shearing edge and one cutting edge. It also has a hook section for tearing and cutting rope/line. The sheath works incredible well and has a positive feeling, easy to use quick release system that releases with a single finger press when drawing the blade. One important thing to note is the knife can be holstered ambidextrously in either orientation for both right and left handed users- it has clip provisions on each side.

It can be carried on arms, legs or your weight belt by using the included heavy duty rubber straps or your own 2" dive belt. The Mares Dagger is a very high quality knife made from the best possible materials.

The Mares Dagger with its sheath sell for $74.95.

The SpearMaster Flat knife & leg sheath is by far the lowest profile offering out of the bunch today which is great for staying out of your way while diving and also minimizes drag while in the water. It measures 8" long in total and is made out of 440 stainless steel that is polished to a mirror-like shine. It's approximately 1/8" thick but doesn't feel flimsy the slightest bit- the knife feels very strong when gripped. The backside of the blade features some serration as well a small hook similar to the Mares Dagger (above) that cuts rope or can tear through material.

The sheath that comes with this knife is what really makes it unique. It's constructed using multiple plies of a rip proof nylon like material and uses thick 1.5" wide elastic straps for mounting to your leg. The holster is ultra thin and even with the knife inserted it stays very tight on your leg and creates no extra drag.

The SpearMaster flat knife sells for $29.95.

Finally comes the Cressi Norge knife and locking sheath. The Norge is a modern, compact knife with a very stout tempered 400 stainless blade. The blade is very robust and the grind angles are just gorgeous. The anatomical, non-slip handle is made from soft rubber grip material and is probably the most comfortable of the bunch. The grip is separated from the blade by small techno polymer thumb tabs. The blade has a smooth edge on one side and partly serrated on the other with a line cutter near the handle. The black techno polymer sheath comes with loops to attach it to the leg or at the waist by sliding your belt through.

The blade hooks into the sheath with a quick-release spring slide that clips the knife in smoothly and positively. Like the Mares Dagger above, the Norge will clip into the sheath ambidextrous for right or left handed divers. The knife comes with two, standard issue straps to attach it to your leg.

The Cressi Norge sells for $42.95.

We hope you were able to gather some knowledge and intel about these products and we hope that the effort we put into this will help you make a more educated buying decision if/when it comes time for you to purchase a great dive knife.

I went through two Riffe knives... Just ordered a sea stinger knife for under $20 and I have a feeling the same Riffe knife will arrive with a different logo

JBL no longer sells the Delta Spike. But I found the same thing on Ebay but named "NINJA COVERT 440C Throwing DART SPIKE Knife + SHEATH!"

Here's the link: http://r.ebay.com/6xRFrb

I recently ordered and received two of these. I had lost my old one, so I was happy to find it again. This spike works very well for stabbing a fish thru its bony head.
